ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey Meeteeka,
I loved your project. You were very confident in your speaking and I noticed that you put a lot of work into the Google slides. Most importantly, your project or presentation was not boring and kept me very engaged, partly due to the similarities in our projects. I also did my project on Virtual Reality and its effects on the human mind, mainly dealing with aggression. I noticed you touched base on the idea of Virtual Reality as a tool for therapy towards the end of your video and in my research, I definitely found that most people would support that idea. Although my research focused on whether VR negatively impacted the brain, many of the sources that I used also stated that there is a lot of good that can come from using VR in behavioral therapy and other medical uses. Overall, I think your project was really cool! -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Meeteeka! Your presentation was obviously very well put together and you spoke very clearly. I could tell you have a lot of passion for this subject. The findings from your research were super interesting. I’ve heard of video games being used as a therapy for things such as ADHD or even physical therapy, but I never considered their benefits on anxiety. This was really interesting!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Meeteeka! I really enjoyed that visual graphics in your slides — it was very compelling and on theme! One aspect that I also really enjoyed about your presentation was that you elaborated on the specific impacts that each gaming technology has on anxiety disorders. I found it interesting that VR has the power to reduce not only anxiety but also social avoidance. I thought this was quite interesting because I had a perception that gaming and VR might actually increase social avoidance and cause people to seclude themselves. Great job!

As someone who deals with anxiety, I have never felt more relaxed and reassured than when I am playing my favorite video games. You have very thoroughly explained what anxiety is and the different types. I especially like the clip where the lady with a fear of heights was playing a VR game that would help combat this fear.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello, Meeteka!
I found your presentation to be very interesting. I deal alot with anxiety, and vr was one of the ways that I tried to prepare myself for practicing speeches. I used the oculus headset at one point to practice speeches since I was nervous about even talking in front of a camera. VR has a ton of potential for helping people with anxiety and I think using gaming as a method of helping people’s anxiety is a very smart idea. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Meeteeka,
I think that your presentation on the topic of anxiety and using video games as a therapy outing is a very interesting thought in itself. Many people nowadays suffer from anxiety, so you looking into the use of video games as a modern medicine for this issue is fantastic topic to discuss. The fact that we’re able to use virtual reality as a relief tactic from stress is amazing to me. You mentioned that there isn’t too much research that backs virtual reality as a full time “cure” for anxiety, but the fact that it can help even a little bit is still a great discovery.

This was a really unique subject to cover & I had no idea video games could serve such a purpose. I think that this is a great modern approach to an issue that is rapidly becoming more widely recognized; I myself would be very comfortable accepting VR activities as a treatment for social anxiety disorder over other treatments (when I was growing up I was usually made to go to random places and speak to people I had never seen before) -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Anna! Since I am also interested in environmentalism, I loved learning about how environmentalism intersected with video games. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Anna!
I really enjoyed that you kept a consistent structure throughout your presentation, and the use of a map/agenda at the beginning of your presentation really helped me contextualize the path you chose for your research. I found it quite interesting that there was a surge of environmentalist themes in video games in the 1990s, especially since video games back then were much more rudimentary than they are now. I wonder in what specific game elements this environmental atmosphere was prevalent in, since the aesthetics of games from the 90s were definitely not on par with today’s games. I was also surprised to hear that these game themes had a potential to influence the overall environmentalist views of millennials today and I wonder how today’s gaming themes will impact the next generation. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey Anna,
At first, I had a hard time thinking about way environmentalism could be implemented within games, but then I remembered just how many different types of games exist, and how the design team very well has the ability to change the environment to not only alter the story, but push ideas about the world. By creating a dystopian or utopian environment, the game is showing us what could be, depending on the choices we make. -

I hadn’t thought about using video games as a medium to bring people closer to nature. I actually haven’t considered the possibility, but it’s interesting to think about games that do this sort of thing. You brought up Animal crossing, but I haven’t really played Animal Crossing, so a game that I thought of that reminds of nature would be Stardew Valley. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Anna,
I like the thought you put behind your topic for this presentation, and how we can better the world through the use of video games. Although that may seem like a strange thought at first, the way you presented your information makes it seem like an extremely possible thing to do, and how it’s actually done in some games. The thing I found most interesting about this topic is that I never thought about how video games could impact someone’s thoughts about the real world in such a way, whether that be about environmentalism, or about something else that’s political like you mentioned.

I thought the presentation was very contextually rich in discussing why we play and enjoy games — environment is a crucial part of the gaming experience and exposure to certain environments can have a large influence on the way we view environments. I can see Animal Crossing New Horizons in particular inspiring people to take up hobbies such as gardening as a response to the role in plays in the game.

Super unique topic — outstanding connections between gaming, marketing campaigns, and child health! I really enjoyed your presentation. Like Julia, I never thought of food packaging as a game, but there are definitely elements of gaming, either through action figures with a Happy Meal or fun cereal box displays. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieMaria this is such an awesome topic and presentation on it!! It was visually engaging and I learned so much. I never thought “gamified packaging” could have such impactful message to consumers. Especially when you talk about how Monopoly has harnessed this for negative social benefits and potentially even BoxTops. Rather than encourage consumers to eat worse (i.e. sugar donuts or sugary cereals), they could have boosted healthy alternatives. In other words, your presentation did a great job at balancing the potential positives in embracing this technology, while also serving as awareness so as to not be tricked by these seemingly innocent games.
I enjoyed watching 🙂

Awesome job! I found it super fascinating that cognitive load plays such a big role. I didn’t know that 3D environments take less brain power to comprehend than a 2D environment, though I suppose that makes sense because we see everything in 3D, so it’s more relatable to us. I wonder if there is a difference between levels of problem-solving and creativity between those who typically only play 2D games vs. those who play 3D, which I assume is a majority of people. -

I really liked that you structured the first part of your presentation like a timeline. It was interesting that you dove into the actual mechanics that changed over time from 1979 to more modern times with 3D gaming, like how it went from a mostly text-based adventure to a realistic, open environment. I had no idea that the first open world game was created in 1979. I will say. I have a slight annoyance at the fact that every single game thinks that by making their creation open world it will be good. That being said, it’s such a commonplace concept now for a game to be open world that it’s hard to picture what it was like back in the day. -

I never realized why I liked open world games the best, but now I know that it’s because I have more time and freedom to understand the game environment.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Dalen, loved your presentation! It was super informative and kept me engaged the entire time 🙂 When you mentioned how some open-world games don’t necessarily have the entire world open due to game portals/leveling, I remember being extremely frustrated by this when I was growing up. I’m not sure why but this is something I’m hyper aware of when playing open-world games, specifically Mario games. It gives the appearance that everything is accessible when it truly isn’t. Versus Animal Crossing that anywhere you can see, you can go!
Another really interesting topic is the idea of “resisting” themes in a game!! I’m wondering if you’ve had this experience while gaming? I don’t play too many so I have to say I have not, but I’m just wondering what types someone would choose to resist? -

The Last of Us is a great game! You mention the importance of a story and the freedom to choose in a single-player game by connecting it to the emotions certain decision evokes in players. It was awesome to get your analysis on the game while incorporating a lot of Schell’s lenses (like @Vallika mentioned above me). I love the idea of Disposition Theory because it means one game can take on a whole new life with each game player. Each game player, having their own preferences, will fabricate a totally different experience based on the plethora of options/customization available in this game. I wonder if you enjoy watching other people’s reactions to the gameplay on Youtube? When I finished playing Life Is Strange, I was obsessed with discovering what ending other players had gotten based on their choices so I fell into this rabbit hole of watching others play lol.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello Chris, I really enjoyed watching your presentation on the story elements of game design. I love how you incorporated images of the subjects that you were talking about to help give a visual on what you were talking about. I also really like how you used the Last of Us II as the backbone to your research. It helps give the audience an example to think about when you discuss the ideas of like the companion character or how being in first person helps tell a story.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieThe Last of Us has to go down as one of the best storylines to be made. It was a game that gave me genuine anxiety and fear over the simplest enemies. I think the audience loves having a companion around, even if they fail to live the whole game, the main concept is creating a bond to the NPC.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Chris,
First of all, I love The Last Of Us 2, it was one of my favorite single player games that I’ve ever played because of the plot and the mechanics within. Storytelling in single player games is an extremely important factor that needs to be executed perfectly to meet the players needs, and you described that perfectly through your conducted research. When story games feel like you’re actually playing a movie, you know the developers did a great job.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieThe part about representational vs presentational narratives was interesting. I also thought it was very clever how the game you mentioned used the mechanic of controlling another character as part of its storytelling. It’s a great way to immerse the player, so that the absence of the other character would mean much more to the player than it otherwise would.

I can actually see your video, I’m assuming you fixed it lol! But, this is actually one of the more serious and actual one of my more favorite topics to discuss in gaming. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Rameet,
I think that this is a very important topic to discuss when talking about people’s behavior due to video games. I personally think that toxicity is one of, if not the worst thing to take place in the video game community. These games are supposed to bring people together as a community, not meant to try and tear each other down. You brought up a great point at the end of your presentation with the real life affects this has on people, and it’s completely unfair for people to be harassed where this is their only comfort spot.

I think relating toxicity to the competitive environment that certain games create is a good way to show how games can perpetuate certain negative behaviors. This cycle can indeed reinforce negative behaviors that manifest in real life interactions, which is an important area to be researched.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Jose! Your presentation on the psychological aspect of gaming was very interesting. I usually don’t think about “real world” applications of games outside of recreational applications, so I was surprised to see all the different uses of games. For instance, the idea that games can enhance student learning, critical thinking, and emotional awareness was really intriguing. Video games are typically viewed by parents/teachers/society as the antithesis of academics and student learning but in reality, games can help further this academic development.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey Jose,
I love the point about motivation factor. By providing the same satisfaction of completing a hard mission or task within a game in the learning system, kids would be much more eager to learn. It goes back to things we read. By gamifying this boring thing, it becomes much more appealing. The intersection of gaming that’s usually associated with mindless entertainment and education is such an interesting crossroads. -

I wholeheartedly agree as I found that you can use gaming as a medium to teach for K-12 education. Something that I think would be interesting to research more into would be the psychological effects of gaming when in a highly competitive environment. Awesome work! Your topic is super fascinating, and I’ve always been a huge fan of horror games, so it was nice to see some mechanics that make up a horror game. I really enjoyed learning about the “gazes” or psychological aspects in particular. It definitely describes why we enjoy horror games/relate to them. One horror game that uses both of these aspects really well is Resident Evil 7, I remember multiple times in the game where the player character would get injured or inflict pain and it definitely does release that feeling of adrenaline.-

Also, the structure of your presentation was very easy to follow and I appreciated the use of categories (autonomy, control, passivity, gazes” to guide your presentation throughout. You also did a great job synthesizing and comparing the different texts. The use of specific examples at the bottom of each slide also connected everything back to real life. One thing I would suggest is maybe putting less text on each page or making the font larger. Great job! -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey Julia,
As someone who recently got into horror games and being that we are currently in October, I loved this presentation. I agree that the giving the player agency within the game is a massive part of immersing themselves into the experience. Since you are the person making the decisions. You are the one driving the story forward. You are the one who has all the bad luck, fully becoming the character is really going to make all the scares and terrors hit that much harder. I think that the idea of witnessing a horrific event, in-game, is a super helpful game mechanic for increasing the pressure. You suddenly get this idea that this could happen to your character, and it’s very obvious that you will come across this character as well. Overall, super interesting project. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi there! 🙂 While I don’t normally elect to play scary games, sometimes it can be fun and your presentation touched on the reasons I do enjoy playing horror games. For example, in Dead by Daylight, I love that I have the control over my survival. Even more so, I get to choose my character who I play as and that gives me specific advantages and/or weaknesses. The “passivity” element is incorporated because when a player (or yourself) gets caught by the serial killer/murderer, you can only watch them be taken back and hung to their death. You have the ability to save your friends, but if they fail to save you, then you merely watch them play the rest of the game and watch them be caught.
Thanks for your presentation, Julia, I enjoyed watching it!! 🙂

It’s so interesting how roped in the players get to the game, to the point where people actually are terrified to keep playing at some points. I saw VR from more of a health and business perspective, so this was incredibly interesting! VR is a lucrative business, so this brings up an ethics question: at what level does society’s safety and mental health become the game designers’ responsibility? ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Jask, I really liked your presentation and topic. VR is very interesting, but I agree that there is controversy around the immersive aspect of the platform. Your topic reminds me of when parents were concerned that games like GTA and Call of Duty were making kids more violent. However, I remember that people were looking at it backwards. Sure, lots of violent people may have played violent video games, but the actual amount of people playing violent video games that go on to act violent is very very small. It’s a reverse correlation situation. However, I do agree that violent video games can still be contributing to people acting violent, just not as much or on as big of a scale as people think.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello Jask!
I found your presentation to be really well done. Personally, I find that VR will make the experience extremely heightened to the point where everything that happens in the game feels real. While VR might heighten negative tendencies in people, it could also help people blow off steam in video games. I would much rather someone go murder crazy in VR than in real life. -

I have to compliment you on the layout and production of your presentation, I especially loved your demonstration and the visuals included! I loved this topic and I absolutely loved your presentation!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieVR games are the future, whether we like it or not. Most people want a realistic game where they feel alive and in control of the elements. With flight simulators becoming more advanced, soon super hero games where the user can fly and use powers will be seamless in transition. While it is laggy and not crystal clear there is much time to finish these projects.

I like how you implemented your own gameplay into this video, it made it feel like I was watching an actual Youtuber talk about the topic. I can definitely see how making these aggressive movements and almost living through the lens of VR could make people think that this will lead into real life aggression, but in my opinion, I feel like it is a person to person case. It could affect one person tremendously and make them much more aggressive in real life, or it could have absolutely no affect on the next person.

I thought your presentation was well edited and made it really engaging; VR is definitely one of gaming’s futures because of how unique its capabilities are. Additionally, I thought the demonstration of a horror game added a lot to the presentation — one of VR’s strengths is heightening the stakes of games, and horror is maybe the best example of this.

I found it super interesting how VR can potentially improve thinking and increase empathy! In particular, it’s fascinating that people feel more embodiment of their character when they’re in VR. I have, however, seen clips on social media of people playing extremely violent games on VR. Because of how a player has to embody the character, if VR does become a staple of modern gaming, I wonder if this will bring back debates about whether or not video games cause violence. -

I really loved your graphics — super on theme and kept me engaged with fun colors! I also appreciated that you laid out an agenda before you got started so I could see the progression of your presentation. Also, great job using statistics at the beginning to contextualize your research (28% of VR users use it daily– wow!!) I also found it super interesting that you dove into the more technical side of benefits of VR, like file size, image resolution etc. All of these factors are part of the user experience, but they don’t immediately jump out at players like aesthetics or graphics do. Great analysis. -

There are more steps involved, but the experience is very interesting.

As a child, I always dreamed of video game technology advancing to a point where I could be IN the game, and it seems we are now there! I see that these headsets can be costly, cause health issues, and not offer much variety…hopefully in the future, this will be improved and VR headsets can be a more popular household item. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello Vallika!! Such an interesting topic, I’m always so intrigued by VR. I really can’t believe this technology has been evolving for a little over 200 years now!! With a cost of 100,000 dollars, I can see how this would limit the ability for people to continue developing and advancing the field though. I’ve never thought about how VR would increase empathy and have the potential to cure disorders such as Claustrophobia. I can imagine how much hope and awareness this would bring! Specifically, for doctoral candidates who cannot feel what patients with chronic pain are experiencing. This will definitely allow for better treatment and patient experience.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Vallika, I really enjoyed this presentation! One of the most interesting points your brought up about VR was the related health effects. I remember when VR first became a thing, people complained about feeling dizzy and nauseous, and having eye strain. These may be temporary effects, but you make a good point that they make a player less likely to play again. I think if developers can find a way to mitigate or get rid of these effects, VR would be much more viable as a gaming platform. Great research!

Allowing them to run simulations that are monitored and without restriction many can enjoy the full liberation of VR. I never really thought of the history of VR, and I especially did not think it would date back all the way to the stereoscope, but that’s a very cool connection that you made there. I remember the first time I used a VR headset it made me so dizzy, but I kind of got used to it after using it a few times. I could definitely see how this rises an issue with the general population though, after all why would someone want to play a game that could make them feel physically sick? Overall the idea of VR is so interesting to me, the fact that we’ve taken another level to being emerged into the game were playing is still so crazy to me.

That first statistic you mentioned in the beginning actually didn’t surprise me since I own a vr headset and haven’t touched it in months. I think people don’t use it too often since it’s annoying to get it setup, and for a lot of games, you have to be physically moving. It’s more convenient to play a game on the couch by pressing the power button on the console, and lying down on the couch. Also, when you mentioned the dizzyness in VR headsets, in reminded me of how I get very dizzy playing certain games on the headset.

I really liked the way you made your project, it looked very professional and it was also very interesting to watch. I do agree that too much noise in a game is definitely distracting and I tend to turn the volume off for a lot of the games I play because of it. So it’s important for game designers to find the perfect balance between too much noise and too little noise.

I’ve never heard of UX gaming, but you actually made it sound very interesting! In addition, the quality of your video is insanely clear! I’ve always loved psychology, so it is really interesting that you brought it into this course. I think I have to agree with Hodent’s point that if someone doesn’t understand something, it makes them more likely to quit. However, the flow theory does a good job of ensuring that all the aspects of a game complement each other to allow players an easy time figuring out how to play. I also like how you mention the conflicting ideas between the study and Hodent’s thoughts on too many visual cues on the screen. Very interesting! -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Evan! UX design is very complicated, so it was really interesting to hear about its psychological background. Your presentation is very well made! It is interesting to see how learning about psychology can help you as a game designer, as user experience is heavily influenced by emotions as a player is playing. By creating less negative and more positive emotions, the game’s “flow” is better, and the user wants to continue playing. Great job! -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi there, Evan!! Absolutely love your chosen topic and your presentation on it was awesome. Very well-spoken. I really loved learning how deeply embedded psychology is in game design because it’s something I think a lot about when playing and watching others play. As Hodent states, if a player struggles to understand the game, they will stop playing. However, if you can land them in that “flow” state, then you have players locked-in. So much of this can be affected by emotions which I loved hearing you say. Often times, I’ll hear my guy friends say before choosing the game they’re all about to play.. “alright how angry are we looking to get?” because certain games bring out different types of frustrations/emotions.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Evan! I found this presentation fascinating, because UX is such a huge part of game design. Given that humans are the ones playing the games, psychology really does matter when designing the gaming experience. I like your point about how sound and music can affect how a person feels playing a game, especially in first person shooters like Call of Duty. I remember an old Call of Duty game had a glitch where a flash bang would go off, do it’s normal thing, but then the video graphics would return to normal but the sound would remain affected until the end of the game. It was very frustrating, as sounds were dampened and there was a high pitched whirring noise, which caused me to feel more tense and nervous. The only way to get rid of this glitch was to either finish the match, or exit the game. Great work Evan!

Your presentation on UX design was very interesting! When you mentioned the quote about how “if a player struggles to understand a game, they will quit”(Hodent, 2017), that got me thinking about the times I’ve quit playing a game because I didn’t understand. I was this way when I first started playing Hollow Knight, and quit because I didn’t understand why I was walking so slowly, and why everyone was raving about the game in the first minute. It’s interesting to think about how games will try to get you hooked from minute one. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieI think the overall aesthetic of a game is important and the music is definitely a key part of that. Fallout provides music from a nuclear 50s where you can see and feel the 50s vibes. On another hand Halo, one of my favorite franchises has invested heavily in its Score. The music builds up the mood and even forces you to fight harder. In the last level of Halo Reach the music would tweak whenever your character became more damaged. Then the sounds ended when Noble 6 was defeated.

User experience is crucial to games and can definitely make a middling game into a great game, or vice versa. I liked your discussion of the psychology that goes into it — game designers have to understand how players feel in using user elements in order to have them be effective in communicating aspects of the game & to know what aspects of the user experience appeal to gamers.

I agree with your point that music often goes unrecognized when discussing important elements of game design. For me personally, good music is what truly makes the experience surreal. When you’re in a driving game, and you have upbeat fast-paced music, it motivates you to go faster, and it really makes you feel the impacts of the race. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Altay! As an avid enjoyer of music, I really agree that music in games is both very important yet very under-appreciated. I think sound and music really helps immerse the player into any game, if done right. If done wrong, or not at all, the game’s atmosphere is very different and bland. I know music has a huge impact on games, because when minecraft controversially switched their soundtrack artist, the music changed drastically and players did not like it that much, causing a fallout of players. I myself am not a huge fan of the new music, and I agree that it doesn’t encapsulate the same vibe that old minecraft C14 music did.

I think that music is extremely important in video games, and I agree with you that it is very under appreciated. Music helps build the theme of the game that you’re playing, for example if you were playing a horror game, scary music helps keep that theme together. Also, if you are in a suspenseful part of a game, I feel like it’s almost necessary to have correlating suspenseful music behind this scene. I think that it’s very interesting that music can help with cognitive performance within games, that’s something that I’ve never thought of before.

I really like how your presentation was very conversational and you went more in depth on the topics and studies, discussing information that was not directly on the slides. I love Coolmathgames and still play it to this day and your presentation unlocked a memory, Freerice! I used to play on Freerice all the time and it was definitely very educational. I love how you played a game for us to show us exactly how gaming can be used in classrooms to enhance learning. It was a very unique touch. I also really liked your ending, we need games in classrooms!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey Gabrielle,
This was super well done, good work! One thing you mentioned at the beginning is that games can communicate emotions or feelings, they can educate people, and more. The same goes with films. However, I feel like games still aren’t widely considered an art form, while films are, and that kind of annoys me. I don’t know, kind of unrelated, but that was the first thing to pop into my head as you mentioned the first source, Anyhow, I enjoyed learning about the educational side of games — great work.

This was a very informative presentation! Mathematical Chess seems like a great way for students to learn both math and chess. It is fun, and teaches them two different skills at once. When students are encouraged to think of studying in a fun way, as opposed to regular lessons and examples, perhaps they retain information much more easily, or have a different attitude towards the subject in general, allowing them to want to learn more. Great job!-

While my presentation focused on the communication aspect of learning, it was really interesting to see how your research included the effects of DGBL on students with learning disabilities. ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHonestly, yes! One of my sources talked about how game-based education is almost a trick on students. It’s a fun game, yes, but they are actually learning in the process, even though they may not realize it. In this way, teachers can almost manipulate their students and encourage them to play these games, which would otherwise be considered counterproductive. It made me think of all the times I played coolmath and freerice during my computer class, and I thought my teacher was just letting us have fun, but there was hidden learning!! I was tricked!!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHahah, I love it, the best type of trickery, I’d say!! You’re totally right though, gaming in the classroom is almost a cheat to learning because it can be so fun. For this reason, I think educators need to be mindful in their approach to selling this type of curriculum to parents! For parents, I can see them easily feeling this is a waste of valuable learning time when in reality they are just not aware of the effectiveness and benefits.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieMy first point is completely unrelated to game design. How did you combine your slides with your video like that? That was really cool. I think that this is going to really beneficial for children going forward. I remember as a kid seeing abc mouse commercials and thinking that a game focused on learning would be really boring, but I never realized that I was looking at the game as a form of entertainment and not a tool for learning. After this, I see that as far as learning tools are concerned, I would be more fun as a child to play a fun game for the sake of learning. It provides an easy to access and low stakes method of learning.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Kattie! I never considered the use of video games as a tool for learning English as a foreign language, but after viewing your presentation it makes complete sense. Video games allow players to enter countless different interactions and scenarios, allowing the non-native speaker to “practice” and get lots of experience. This removes some of the pressure/nervousness that usually comes with speaking a non-native language. I’ve heard that immersion via TV shows and music is also a good way to learn a non-native language, but video games can take it to another level by allowing the player to actually interact.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Julia, thanks for your response! 🙂 Yes, you got it! Removing the pressure/nervousness out of the language learning is half the battle because then students are more willing to take risks and create more learning opportunities! As someone who speaks Spanish and English (I’m hispanic), I always suggest people watch soap operas with subtitles on because there is an opportunity to learn based on how dramatic everyone is in those lol. When you compare it video games, though, this is a much more active process which allows for more dynamic learning!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieAI within games is such an interesting conversation. You’re presentation reminded me of a horror game called Alien: Isolation. It’s based on the classic movie, but the titular alien is trying to get you as you learn more about the story and what’s going on. The interesting part is, the alien has AI built into it. It learns from moves that the player does constantly and adapts to it. Meaning, you can’t hide in the same place twice, or expect to do the same maneuver as last time. It’s really scary, but it requires the player to do some problem solving because of how smart this AI is. It’s an incredible resource for game design.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello Jaz!
I find your presentation on Artificial Intelligence super interesting! AI was something that I was actually interested in studying at college, and I’ve taken a course on Intro to AI and will probably take Machine Learning next semester. AI seems to be very important, especially now with how advanced the technology is getting. There were examples of people creating near perfect AI copies of youtubers, and people able to simulate walking dogs. AI in games are important too, as the AI gets better, people start getting better at cheating in video games too. People learn things that they wouldn’t normally try before due to the AI not having an emotional thought behind their line of thinking. -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Jared! The progression of graphic/aesthetic style in video games has always been interesting to me so I really enjoyed watching your presentation. One thing I find intriguing is how some (mostly indie) developers are starting to gravitate back to a pixelated/retro graphic style, even after major technological advancements. This could be because they feel nostalgic for the old games and want to recreate their graphic style.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieThe section that talked about going 3d or 2d was really interesting. I think it does have to do with the idea of how it more closely resembles how we see the world. I do think that the argument regarding cartoonish graphics also holds weight. Certain things just won’t work with realistic graphics.

I think it’s crazy that we live in a world where we are able to replicate to a T what real life looks like in a video game. I think a lot of it definitely has to do with money, as well, but I agree that different styles afford different abilities. I liked your point about how cartoon styles allow designers to have more free reign over things in the game, whereas a more realistic approach limits designers to more realistic outcomes. I think another interesting point is how the limitations of game graphics influenced how games look and work. For example, old Nintendo systems could only support a certain amount of colors on the screen at one time, so graphics designers had to be meticulous about the colors of different objects and people.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Jared! Your presentation was very well made and extremely informative. I liked your style of presentation but one thing I think you could improve on is editing in some basic charts or text so it’s a little easier to comprehend, at least for me. Otherwise, I like how you went through all your sources and took us through what you did and didn’t find. You did a great job!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Jared!
I really liked the layout and formatting of your presentation! The charts were a little hard to follow, but that might just be a personal thing for me haha! Your research question was very thought provoking, but I think the main reason that designers use other art styles is because of money. Maybe along with personal preference and what they think fits, but I think the main motive would be money, or lack thereof.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi!
I found it really interesting how you were able to condense all your sources into a few words to present the main idea. I like how you went more in-depth with each article. Your presentation was very informative. I’ve never heard of Shapley values before but I understand now that it is used in game theory that involves fairly distributing both gains and costs to several actors working in coalition.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi Bunbun1k, I thought your analysis on game balance was very interesting. I do think it’s true that the balance between challenges but still able to be beaten is important. There are a few games where some bosses or levels are just too hard, and that can cause players to give up and not want to play anymore. One such game like that for me was Watch Dogs, where one of the missions was nearly impossible and required lots of developed skill or just crazy luck to pass. I couldn’t get past it, but it just made me want to give up and not play the game anymore. On the opposite end, though, challenge is still
important because without it, games would be too easy and not interesting. Great summary and analysis of your research! -

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHey, You did a great job on your presentation! You took an approach that I had never seen before by condensing all of your research into the equivalent of a short paragraph. However, it didn’t feel like anything was missing at all, in fact, you took us through it all very clearly and it helped me understand everything that wasn’t on the screen. Great Job!

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHello Bunbun1k,
I enjoyed watching your presentation on game balance! Game balance is something I think about often, and it’s something that’s extremely thought of in multiplayer games. It’s very important to make sure that the game is not overbearingly easy, and vice-versa. A game with a good example of game balance that I just thought about was Super auto pets. There isn’t a set meta that everyone uses, there are tons of different strategies that people employ.-

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieI haven’t played that, but it sounds fun. And I agree that if the challenges are too easy or hard, players start to lose interest.

ParticipantRupees: 0 RupeesRank: NewbieHi there!
This was a very interesting presentation, I have never really thought about game balance much before, and your findings were fascinating! I liked the amount of detail, but not too much, that you went into with each article, and I learned new things, like Shapley values, which I think Meeteeka also pointed out.
