For your Week One Quest, you were asked to play a game and share a reflection here.

(Remember, you must post once by 11:59 pm on Friday, January 20th, and again by 11:59 pm on Monday, January 23rd.)

This is one of the last times you’ll be able to play and enjoy a game strictly as a “player.” (Soon, you’ll be viewing all games through the lens of game design, and you’ll be seeing everything differently…)

In your first post (by 11:59 PM on Friday), share the following:
        – Identify and describe the game you played.
        – Explain why you selected that game.
        – Identify some of the game mechanics. (For example, was it a single or multiplayer game?)
        – Reflect on the impact that those game mechanics had on your experience.
        – Treat the game like a “text” and offer some related analysis. (For instance, does the game have an implicit message or a hidden agenda?)
        – Think outside of the box. Include anything else you’d like to reflect on and analyze!

After you’ve posted once, respond to at least two of your classmates. Reflect on their own gameplay experiences, shared experiences that you’ve had, or connections to your own reflection! (Be thoughtful in your posts! Remember to be human and have a conversation — don’t be a forum-posting-robot!)

I played League of Legends, which is a MOBA game by the Riot Games. I chose this game because it is popular among my friends, allowing me to play with them and making the game more enjoyable. It is a multiplayer game, with three different game options, Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, and TFT. I played Summoner’s Rift, where you are on a team of 5 against 5 others, who have different roles of, Attack Damage Character, Support, Jungle, Mid Lane, and Top Lane. The objective is to destroy the opposite team’s Nexus, and arriving to that point your team can tackle objectives and you can purchase items to enhance your gameplay. Within each role, there are several characters you can choose to play, which each have 4 different abilities. As you play the game there are more mini-objectives you can achieve. When you reach a certain level based on your general gameplay, you are able to compete in ranked matches, where you compete against people similar in level. Beating them increases your rank, as the holistic objective of the game is to reach the highest rank, challenger. Every “season” of the game ranks reset. The challenge of the complexity of mastering this game along with the reset of the rank keeps players hooked. The sub- objectives of the game add to my experience by urging me to play more to meet those accomplishments.

League of Legends has a deeper meaning within every aspect of the game. Each character, called a champion can be found to have an original backstory, along with a character card drawn in different art styles. As each champion can play different roles and have different abilities, each champion has a strong opponent and strong ally champion. The strength and success of a player can be determined solely based on the player’s skill at a champion, showing the diversity of a champion’s success based on the player’s knowledge of how to play the champion. This reveals the conclusion that skill and knowledge are key to ensure victory in a game. Another aspect of the game is its objective of defeating the opponent’s Nexus. Despite a team’s high kill count, better items, and skill, if the opposing team manages to destroy their Nexus, they are defeated. The importance of balance of mini- objectives and the greater purpose of the game is highlighted as mini- objectives may help to reach the greater objective, but being too absorbed in it can cause the opposite result.

              Hi Joeun,

I have never heard of this game before but you gave a very thorough description that gave me some sense of understanding for it. It is very interesting that even if a team has all the odds against them they can still win by killing the other teams Nexus. I will definitely have to read into this game for more information!

Hi! I have never played this game before, but a lot of my friends are obsessed with League of Legends so I am intrigued to try it out one day. I loved hearing about your different interpretations of each game. It definitely sounds like something that would be fun to play with a ton of people. Does this game require some sort of PC or console? Or can you play this online with a normal laptop?

                  Hey Joeun:

I also love playing League of Legends. Playing this game with friends always brings me a lot of joy. The game itself is also very challenging. I fully agree with your analysis of the deeper meaning of League of Legends. Riot Games designs a background story for each champion, I believe this is to encourage players to explore the game and find their favorite champion. Also, the game is also very goal-oriented, destroying the base, you win. If the opposite pushed your crystal, even if you killed more people, you still lose.

Hi Joeun, even though I have never actually played this game, i feel like it is impossible not to have heard about it by this point. Your post gave me at least a basic understanding of how the game is played, and i thank you for that. Maybe your post will get me to want to set up an account for myself on League one day in the future.

I played Telestrations and it is a game where you and others pick a card and draw it out on the given white board. Once you draw it you hand it to the next person and they guess what it is. Then they hand it to the person next to them and they have to draw their guess. The game gets to be very funny when the players are not artistic at all. I selected this game because it is a game my friends and I enjoy playing and we always have such a fun time playing it. This game is a multiplayer game and the more people there are the better and the more fun there will be. If this game was single player it would not be fun at all and pointless, I would not want to play this by myself. Having others to play with is what makes it fun. The game allows expression of different pictures at hand. Through this game it shows that even though two people could be drawing the same thing, their interpretation is completely different. With this being said, this is probably my favorite part of the game, seeing everyone else’s interpretations.

With all of this being said, I can say that this game brings memories back to my life that are some of the happiest. When I played it for this post with my roommates it brought back memories of my friends from home and how much fun this game was and still is for us. When we see each other during break we still play it and we are always cackling with each other. For me the meaning of this game is bringing people together and using their sense of humor to mean something. This game always makes me think of my friends and happy times in my life and that is why I will always love to play this game.

Hi Erin! I love this game and have so many wonderful memories attached to it. I remember playing Telestrations with my family and friends, but it has a twist to the published rules. Back when I played it when I was younger, I would call it the “drawing guessing game”, as we ripped up pieces of scrap paper into odd rectangles and passed them around. Everyone had a pen or pencil and we would think of our own simple sentence for the next person to draw. With more people and a bizarre sentence, the end result would always be hilarious.

Hi Erin! That sounds like a fun game, although I never heard of Telestrations. I love games that are not only interactive but ones that also allow me to express myself creatively (like Pictionary!) so this definitely sounds like a game I have to try. This game kind of reminds me of Pictionary mixed with telephone!

Hi Erin! This game brought back so many good memories, and I have not played it in so long! I remember playing it when I was in middle school in an after-school CCD class. I also love how you pointed out that the game is so fun for all of you and brings happy memories back to life. That is exactly why when I do play games, I always pick something that is fun and can include everybody I am with. I think group games at family or friend gatherings or parties are the best!

Games such as these are so few and far between these days however I feel they are one of the most important as they create great memories and such a fun environment. This also seems like a great game to play as an ice breaker for meeting new people!

I also enjoy playing telestrations, and one thing that you pointed out that I found really insightful was that the game really plays on the interpretations of each individual, drawing many different perspectives together to create something that brings great fun and humor. I also think that it is a really great game for bringing friends together or for meeting new people, since you get to all laugh together and interact in a unique way.

I played 8 ball pool mobile version. I randomly downloaded this game a few years ago during a road trip, and I have been addicted to it since! Within the game, there are various different options, including 8 ball, 9 ball, etc. You can also choose various modes whether that’s multiplayer with friends, versus a computer-generated bot, or there is even an option where you can just play against yourself in “practice mode.” That’s one of my favorite parts of this game; the myriad of possibilities you can play within the app allows you to switch it up each time and you don’t get bored. Another fun aspect of this game is its point system. Upon choosing a game, you essentially get to choose the number of coins you want to bet. The amount of coins is correlated with the difficulty level of that game. For example, betting 100 coins would allow you to play a fairly easy round whereas if you pool in 10,000 coins, you are playing a much harder game that may give you a shorter play time or no guidelines for instance. With each win, you earn the money you bet plus your opponents.

All in all, I think this game has a pretty implicit message. The objective of play is to earn the most amount of coins possible, which ultimately dictates how many games you can play moving forward. I don’t play this game as often anymore as I used to, but I always have so much fun playing against my cousins even when we are not together. I love challenging them and my friends and it always creates the best memories!

Hello Ani! I have never played 8 ball through a separate app, only through Game Pigeon, but it sounds very fun! I like the idea of betting with the coins, and betting more or less depending on how challenging you want the game to be. This allows for someone who may be a more experienced game player to play at a higher level, and also for beginners to start off slow which I like a lot as well, as you kind of set your own pace per se. Very nice!

Hi Ani! I could say I am quite unskilled at playing billiards, but I have tried to play 8-ball both in reality and on my mobile device. To me, I find that playing 8-ball on my mobile device is less challenging than playing 8-ball in reality. This is because on mobile devices, there is an assistive aiming line that can help predict where the white ball will go after the collision. Another dissimilarity between playing billiards on mobile devices and in reality, is that on mobile devices, one typically competes against AI, and there are also online and real-life multiplayer options. However, in reality, it is typically oneself against oneself or against another person.

Hi Ani! I’ve played 8-ball, too, but only through the one that comes on iOS. I never heard of a version where you can bet coins, but it sounds like that only serves to make the game more exciting by raising the stakes and having another goal besides just winning.

You mentioned how there are multiple ways to play this game, but I think playing with a game with real friends is the most fun. My version of the game does not allow me to play against more than one person, though, which sounds like it would be even more fun.

Your post made me miss playing it with my friends, though, so I’ll probably start a game with one of them after this!

The game I played is What Remains Of Edith Finch, which is a first person game in which you explore an abandoned family house and slowly discover the tragedy that haunts the family within it. I chose it because it was recommended to me, and overall I think I might recommend it again but it’s a very heavy game emotionally and touches on a lot of sensitive topics as it’s basically about each family member’s death and the grief that follows. So tread with caution on this one.
The game works by clicking on various parts of the house as a character, Edith Finch, narrates her own experience of finding out the family history. As she finds things out so does the player. There’s also a sense that the viewpoint character is a member of the family themselves. There are also some puzzle type events, but mostly the game guides you through the house automatically by only triggering narration when you click the correct thing.
I think this was a good balance of just clicking around and also having some interaction through the events. Personally I’m not great at action type sequences so I prefer story based games, and I think this is very much a story based games. The events are mostly to add some challenge to the story as the rest is mostly reading and watching.
In terms of messages, as I mentioned the game is about grief and how death affects this family. Because family members keep facing one tragedy after another, they become convinced that there is a curse in the Finch family, and there is discussion as to whether their latent fear of a curse is what perpetuates the misfortune itself, or if a different attitude might at least offset some of it. At the same time, it’s hard to argue that their luck isn’t unusually bad. Another important theme is that the narrator Edith’s mother tries to shelter her children from the family by moving, not sharing the family history, and even by sealing off the rooms of family members that have departed. Upon discovering the family’s stories Edith’s resentment is accompanied by an understanding of how much grief her mother was trying to protect her from, but also motivation to tell her own child what she knows in the form of the game’s narration as she reveals partly through the game that she is narrating while pregnant. Overall I think it’s a game whose message will hit differently for everyone since it can be very personal, but I think at the very least it provokes some thought about how such family matters should be handled and offers some perspective into the different opinions on the matter. But it really gets heavy, I cried for real.

I wonder if the creator of this game based it on their own family or a family from history. By reading about it, there seems like there is some resemblance to the bad luck of the Kennedy family and from that I definitely will check this game out. Thanks for the caution!

Hi Pragya! I am very captivated by horror games, and this sounds like a game I would love to play. The murder mystery along with the thriller piques emotions that engages the player, even more with the aspect of being “apart of the family”. I know I get scared easily, but that is what makes the experience more enjoyable. I have played horror games like Phasmophobia and The Mimic, however I have never played a single player horror game. This game is definitely on my list.
I also searched up if this game was based on a true story because it reminds me of true crime cases. I found the game designer based it off of his experience as a scuba diver and the eeriness of the ocean as it falls into darkness.

                                                    Hi Pragya,
I think that this was a very interesting choice of a game. I have never heard of it before but it sounds very cool by the way that you described it. I also enjoy games that have a sad undertone because I feel like it makes them different and thought provoking.

The game I chose is Sid Meier’s Civilization V. It is a strategy game that you can choose one civilization in history and develop your civilization to win the competition with other players. There are several ways to win the game. Through technology means you need to be the first one to launch rockets to explore the space; through culture means to use your international cultural influence to beat other civilizations’ domestic cultural influence; through wars means to occupy all other civilizations’ capital city; through diploma means to be elected to be world leader. The reason why I pick this game is I have been playing this game for more than six years but I can still learn from it. For example your capital city is founded on a small island with only a few resources to develop. You have to find new habitats, which means to fight on the land belong to the other player. It teaches me a lot about global politics, and the way to look at our history.
The game is complex, I will try my best to explain here. There are several key elements that matters. Population, this decides how many people you have in the city, it influences the developing speed of your technology and the productivity of your city. Population is always the larger the better, the growth rate of your population is related to where your city is founded. Is there river nearby, is there place to be improved to be farmland? Money, as simple as it sounds like, money can buy buildings and maintain all daily expense of your worker and army. Cultural influence, more cultural influence can result in a faster rate of policy making. Different policy will bring different benefits for your development. Production, city is the center of manufacture, so all the buildings and army unit will be built in city. A larger production value means your city can build things faster. Technology, it influence the development of your technology. The advanced technology always means you will have better army, better buildings inside city. Those key elements all need to be well balanced. And you should not just focus on your own development, you need to keep an eye on other players to prevent they have too many accumulated advantages to win the game.
It is complex but it also keeps you busy during playing the game. You have so many things to consider, and make the best decision for your civilization. It is a great experience since you are watching your civilization growing step by step. It is like you are creating history. Play this game is like writing a story, you have basic setting (civilization, capital city, neighbor civilizations, and mechanics of the game). It is like a story just finished ACT I, all you need to write is the most excited ACT II. You can be a tyrant to conquer everything, or you can avoid wars at all. It is your choice where your civilization will be going.
History is reality, and what we are doing and thinking will become history one day. I have been playing this game for six years and more than one thousand hour playing time. The excellent mechanics is one reason, but I think what obsessed me most, is the curiosity of what made we stand where we are, and where will we be headed to in the coming future.

Hi Ziyang, I’ve also tried out Sid Meier’s Civilization V a couple times. I’ve only played the game for a couple times, but as you mentioned, it is definitely a complex game that keeps players busy. When I first booted up the game and played for the first time, I remember being so lost that I didn’t understand anything that was going on. However, as I played a couple more times, I realized that the game was just like a world of my own that I can guide in whatever direction I want. As you mentioned, history is reality, and while I was playing I really liked the aspect of creating my own personal history. To successfully create my legacy, the game requires you to understand the different elements of a society (in this case, game mechanics) and it really left me thinking while I was playing the game. I’m happy to find someone that is invested in this game, as it is definitely a cool game.

I played a level of Candy Crush on my iPhone. The earlier levels are easier, and each level gets increasingly more challenging. Basically, you have to “swap” the candies on the screen to make at least 3 in a row or column, but you can also get 4 or 5 in a row or column depending on the game board. In more difficult levels, you may have to “crush” the candies that have a gel-like coating or bars over them, and that requires more attempts in the same area in order to make a match. It is a little difficult to explain, but I am sure many of you are familiar with it. It is a single-player game, but each week you can compete against other players to win a chest of prizes by completing more levels, more quickly than your competitors. I feel like the message of the game is very simple, but not always easy to achieve. At the beginning of each level, it explicitly tells you the goal, shows you your progress along the way, and shows you how many moves, or “swipes” to make matches you have left during each game. I feel this game is very addicting and to me, a stress reliever, which is why I play it so often. It is also not a very long game, maybe a few minutes at most, so I can play it before classes, in the car, on the bus, walking around, etc.

Hi Megan, I also play Candy Crush! I agree with you that this game is a good stress reliever and is super relaxing. I enjoy that as you play it gives you a specific goal each level so that it keeps the game interesting and not just the same objective every time as it keeps you hooked. I feel as though the levels do get to a point where they are so difficult that you are faced with the problem of either buying power ups that help you win the level, or you must play lot of times before you win which is very frustrating at times.

And stress-relieving, since it’s easy to understand and beat. Sometimes learning all the rules of the game or trying to beat a level can be stress inducing in itself. I replied to another post below about how monetizing the game can affect it, so Alexis also makes a good point that making it too money based can be frustrating. Because now we’re stressed again!

I played the Sims and I have enjoyed playing it for over a decade now. I own sims 2,3 and 4. For those who don’t know, the sims are a series of life simulation games created by EA where users can control and customize their “sims” and pursue any career or relationship goals. When you start the game, you get to create a virtual world and fill it up with people. This is a single-player game although I do know that you can create an online account where players can be friends if they choose and exchange players, items, and even virtual worlds. My favorite thing to do on the sims is to create a house and interior design it. It’s like watching the HGTV channel and having the ability to create your own home for free! The game is so relaxing, it’s probably my way of escaping my own reality in some way, since I have the ability to completely control a virtual character that I created and make decisions I probably would not make in real life. I also like the creative aspect of the game. I like to design and create things and there are a lot of tools available on the sims that allow me to do that. You can also add extensions to the game that allow you to have more options to choose from when creating the game. This also makes the game addicting because once the game starts to get boring you can just add different features and then you’re hooked again.

I think that it is cool you decided to play SIMS, I like this game also. What I liked about this game is that you can choose what your character does and that changes the course of their lives. I also agree with what you mentioned at the end about when the game gets boring how you can just add new features and it makes it interesting again. I like when games do this because if they do not add anything the game can become very boring and it loses popularity.

I have never played that game before, but I have seen many videos and TikToks about it and it looks really fun. I’ve seen videos where a girl designs a house in her Sims for a random budget and I find it super interesting and fun to watch. You mentioned that you like to design houses and I think that is so cool and seeing so many options can really bring out a sense of expression and pride when making a house nice. I want to try to play Sims one day because I think I would enjoy designing my house and having a calm game to play.

I used to play the Sims when I was younger, and like you, I really enjoyed it because I could just do whatever I want and essentially build my own world. When I was a kid, it was basically like my “dollhouse” where I made characters fall in love and such, but, as I grew older, I started to enjoy the more world-building aspect, like the making of a house and interior designing you mentioned.

I think I enjoyed watching people play the Sims more than actually playing it, though, which is why I didn’t actually play it all that much. It’s cool that you still play it, though! I have to try out the later versions sometime; they’re probably even better than the one I play when I was young!

The idea of making my own city and doing whatever I want with the inhabitants of that city is pretty appealing. I think the game provides its players with a unique experience, as although you have to build your creations with the toolset that the game gives you, you’re free to do whatever you please with those tools. I can also see why you’d mention that the game helps its players escape ones mundane reality, as you can create a world to become fully immersed into.

I decided to play League of Legends, which is an online game played on the computer. Basically, there are two sides, and each side has five players, each playing a certain “champion.” The playing field is a large board that has towers, and the objective of the game is to destroy the towers and get to the enemy’s base (Nexus). I selected this game because I am very familiar with it, and it is usually the game I turn to when I need to destress. The game is multiplayer, and each champion has their own set of moves (abilities) that allow them to fight in certain ways. In addition, each player on the team is assigned a different role to play. Having different champions all interacting in the multiplayer environment definitely impacts my playing experience, because you have to start thinking as a team and playing to your advantages. Interacting with real people creates higher stakes, because you know that other people are watching and depending on you. This also means, unfortunately, that teammates can get mad at each other when teammates are not fulfilling their duty, which I guess would negatively impact the playing experience. In addition, it might sound kind of weird, but you develop a sort of connection with the character that you play, which makes the game more immersive and replayable. The fact that you can play many different champions in different roles, all with different abilities, also adds a feeling of excitement because every game is different and unknown.
If I were to treat League like a text, I would say that it has three different sections, or acts. In the beginning, you don’t have any money and can only learn one move, so you have to earn money and level up by yourself by “farming” small minions. In the game itself, this is called the laning phase, where you are for the most part on your own, trying to level up and put yourself at an advantage over your opponent. This feels like the start of a journey, or the start of a story. The second stage of the game is when team fighting starts to come into play, and you have to work as a team to start focusing on objectives. The multiple expositions for each character come together, in a sense, and begin interacting with each other and forming one larger story. The final stage of the game is when you break into the enemy base, at which point any given fight can result in the game ending. The stakes are much higher now as the game reaches its conclusion, similar to the final act of a story. Through these acts, what players realize is that even though they may be ahead in terms of gold and levels, they still might lose if their communication is poor. Just because one team is more skilled than the other does not mean that they will win. Also, being able to adapt and respond to game conditions is very important. If there is a champion that does a lot of magic damage, you can buy items with magic resist.

Hi Chris! I was also considering playing League of Legends for this assignment! I really enjoyed reading through your analysis of the game as I could relate to a lot of it myself through my experience playing this game as well as playing other games like the game I played this week (Pokemon GO). How were the games you played this week? Did you have fun? Did you win? Reading through your explanation of the game from the point of view of someone who does not know much about the game, I would think this game was a game that required a lot of communication from beginning to end and requires a lot of mental strength to do everything perfectly. As an ex League player myself, I could relate a lot to certain areas of your post such as when you talked about having a connection to the champions in the game. I saw this as sort of having a main champion that someone plays best. For me, having a connection to a certain character, agent, or champion in a game like this means a character that I feel most comfortable playing as it maintains a high amount of confidence and allows me to play better. League is great in that every game is a new story like you said and with so many champions and so many backstories, there are so many matchups, mechanics, and general game knowledge one must know to perfectly assess in game situations. I like how you dissected the game like a storybook and was very amazed in how you explained it so well. I also have experience with teammates getting mad at me when I do something wrong. I hope that did not happen to you during your games this week.

                                                                                  Hi Christina!
Subway Surfers was also a part of my childhood, and I agree that it is very addictive. It seems like the hidden agenda of the game really is to get the player to keep going, on and on. The player really cannot stop until the end of the game, and even if they get caught, then they can simply press play again and the rush begins again.

I also played a couple games of league recently, and I really relate to when you mention the connection between champion and the player. As someone who is very invested in the lore of League of Legends, I really like to spend time outside of games to look at relationships between champions, and the in game interactions between them (usually I’m too busy laning when the game starts haha). Some of my favorite champions I play are Gwen, Aphelios, and Ezreal, and its really interesting to see how each champion’s kit also shows a bit of their personality. It really makes me think alot about the effort that the designers put in to make each champion interactive and fun to play.

The game I played was League of Legends (LOL for abbreviation). It is a super popular and enduring online competitive game in China and I think that is the reason why I play it. It is the first multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game I ever played, and it is the game that I have spent the most time playing. From my second year of high school to the second half of my first year of college, I would play over 10 ranked matches almost every day. (I will explain later what a ranked match is). This game has accompanied me through half of my youth, and that is the reason why I selected this game.

Typically, LoL has three game modes: Summoner’s Rift, ARAM and TFT. I believe TFT does not belong to MOBA, it is more like a chess game, so here, I will not introduce it. In the Summoner’s Rift and ARAM modes, you will choose one of over a hundred playable characters (also known as “champions”) and work with four other teammates to defeat the opposing team of five players. In the game, each champion has four abilities, and by leveling up, you can strengthen or learn one of these abilities. The game is divided into the top lane, middle lane, bottom lane, and jungle. You and your four teammates will be assigned to a specific lane. Each lane will have minions that periodically spawn and march towards the enemy team, by killing these minions and monsters you will earn gold and experience. The gold can be used to purchase items that will make you stronger. There are three defensive towers in each lane, if you can destroy them, the next objective is the inhibitors which will be vulnerable to attack. When you destroyed the inhibitors, you will be able to attack the nexus and by destroying the nexus you win the game. The Summoner’s Rift also has two modes, matchmaking and ranking. In matchmaking, whether you win or lose, you will not gain or lose anything. However, in ranking mode, there are points to be gained and lost. These points reset at the end of each season. Winning earns you points, losing deducts points. These points are reflected by ranks, and every 100 points earned will promote you to the next rank. The ranks from lowest to highest are Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond. These ranks also have divisions, such as Bronze IV, Bronze III, Bronze II, Bronze I. Each division requires 100 points to be promoted. After Diamond, you are considered a Master. There is no limit to the number of Masters on each server. After reaching 200 points, you will be promoted to Grandmaster. However, each server only allows 300 Grandmasters, so if there are more than 300 players above 200 points, the threshold for promotion will be higher. The next rank is Challenger, it requires 500 points. Similar to Grandmaster, if there are more than 200 players above 500 points, the threshold for promotion will be higher.‘

So, the ranking score represents how well you perform in the game. I think the ranking mechanism is the reason why this game is so popular worldwide and the ranking mechanism will directly affect everyone’s game experience. Everyone plays ranking mode to win. So when choosing champions, we all choose the ones we are most skilled with to ensure the highest chance of winning the game. Many people, including myself, only play one or a few heroes since first time playing this game (of course, they know the skills of other heroes, they just don’t want to play them). So I think this is also a negative impact of ranking scores on me, that is, not willing to explore the interesting aspects of other champions and only focus on winning or losing the game. In addition, when it comes to the experience, I have to say that most players, in order to win the game, will communicate politely with their teammates. But there are some players with poor manners, once their own game is not going well, they will start to blame their teammates, even insulting their teammates.and the game’s implicit messages could be perseverance and determination. Players may face defeat in the game, but they have the ability to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger. Thus, the hidden agenda could be “emphasis on winning can foster a competitive and toxic environment among players.” This can lead to players becoming fixated on winning and losing, rather than enjoying the game. and the game’s implicit messages could be perseverance and determination. Players may face defeat in the game, but they have the ability to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger.

                                                                                  • #7624

The game that I played this week is Persona 5 Royal, which is the Nintendo Switch port of the original game published in 2016 for Playstation consoles. The game is a mostly single player game with co-op aspects. The game takes place in modern Tokyo, and follows the lives of high school students who obtain special powers called “personas”. They form a group called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, and explore palaces in the Metaverse which is a supernatural realm formed by one’s desires. I decided to continue playing the game as I was gifted a Nintendo Switch during the holidays and I was a big fan of the main protagonist in the game, Amamiya Ren. I only have about 10 hours of playtime so I do not know the entire story of what happens, but the game has successfully hooked me in so far. The game’s story is intricately written, and in-game features help immersion and also give a bit of freedom and leniency in gameplay. The game follows a calendar like format, where players go through each day, and there are story deadlines within the calendar, which gives a lot of freedom on pacing. For example, the game gives a period of 2 weeks before a certain palace must be conquered, or else it will be game over. However, the 2 weeks can be spent in any way the player wants. The main task is usually to conquer palaces of the villains in the Metaverse before a deadline (for example, the expulsion of the Phantom Thieves is on the line for the first deadline). As long as this deadline is met, players are free to spend each day going out with the protagonist’s friends, working part-time, or doing various activities to increase the main character’s various stats (intelligence, charm, etc). Palace exploration is when the actual action takes place. Palaces are basically dungeons that manifest from the villain’s desires, and players must fully explore the maze and steal the treasure to get rid of the villain’s desires in the real world. For example, the first villain, Kamoshida, is a perverted PE teacher who preys on the students of the volleyball team, treating them as underlings and acting like he is the king.

As someone who is invested into story-heavy games, I enjoyed the immersion that the game provides. The game’s OST consists of jazz heavy music, which goes along with the stylish art style of the game. This is a trait of the Persona series as a whole, and the graphics give off a distinct vibe and engraves to the players that this is a Persona game. It is also fully dubbed, which adds heavily to the immersion. One of the interesting parts about Persona 5 is that the villains they address in the game connect to social issues present in society. For example, the first villain Kamoshida addresses sexism and school violence. Also, relating to the psychological term persona itself, the game’s main theme relates back to freedom, justice, and rebellion. The personas that the main characters use are significant to their characterization, and the game implicitly connects these traits to the social issues in present day Japan. I can’t wait to see the rest of the story that the game has for me to enjoy and I look back to playing some more of the game this weekend.

The game that I chose to play was, animal crossing. I decided to play this game because it is very calm and a good way to wind down after a long day. This is a single player game, although it is possible to meet up with other players online as well. In this instance I preferred that it was primarily a single player game because I wanted to play something on my own, and you can choose if you want to meet up with other players. There are times when I want to play games with other people and in that instance I would choose something else. To explain the game, basically you are sent to an uninhabited island and you have to complete tasks such as cutting down trees or harvesting fruit in order to make some money. After you have made money you have the opportunity to make your island better and customize it with homes and shops. I have not played this game in a long time because after a while it becomes very repetitive since they have not updated it in a while or added new features. This game is very upfront and does not really have any hidden messages or meanings. It is more of a feel happy game that does not require much work. In general I like this game when I am trying to relax after a long day or when I am not trying to play a game that requires much thinking. However I hope that in the future there will be an update because it is becoming quite unvaried.

I used to love this game and your response has made me want to redownload it and play it again! I can agree with you that the game does seem a bit redundant, as there are no special features or challenges per se after playing it for a bit, and I think that is why I got bored of it as well. However, I do like that it is kind of a relaxing game without too much action or thinking for when I want to occupy my mind for a bit.

                                                                                        • #7639

I played a game called Pokemon GO, which is a mobile game available on the App Store. This game is a very unique game as it implements an augmented reality and combines it with adding Pokemon in our world. This game allows the player to catch pokemon as they go about their day as if they were spawning in the world around us. In this game, a player must walk around and wait for a pokemon to spawn around them on the screen. When a pokemon spawns on the screen, the player can tap on a pokemon and have an opportunity to catch the pokemon with their pokeballs and berries which can be obtained through Pokestops while walking around, or through various missions and quests offered. There are many other features that this game has such as gyms, raids, and battles that give the game another dimension. As for mechanics, players must continue to catch pokemon, complete missions, and participate in events to accumulate XP. The user interface is very friendly as there are not many menus and easy to navigate for almost any player. While the player is able to catch the pokemon that they love, there is also a combat power factor to each pokemon with move and appraisal attributes that determine its strength. These factors allow players to compete with one another and give incentive for further progression in the game itself. Although this game can be seen as a single player game with its traditional pokemon catching features, the multiplayer features enhance the user experience through intense battles, trading, and motivates people to level up and become even stronger. I selected this game because I personally play this game a lot during my free time. What makes this game special is that it’s not the typical game that people play. This game allows me to connect with my friends, go on adventures both in game and in real life, and promotes a very positive message.

These game mechanics have motivated me to continue playing, and become stronger. Having other friends that play the game also encourages me to become more involved with the game, making my overall experience more enjoyable. The possible adventures and places that I can go while playing this game is limitless and I love how there are mechanics such as eggs that require walking to hatch. I also have spent a good amount of my childhood playing pokemon, so having the ability to catch the pokemon I love with the device in my pocket has piqued my interest. In my experience, I battled my friends, caught pokemon while walking on Livingston campus and fought raids with my friends.

Looking through the surface of just the gameplay itself, I think this game has a hidden agenda in promoting exercise. Usually, people who play games tend to stay indoors and do not promote any sort of physical activity. In Pokemon GO, the mechanics of having pokemon spawn in, hatching eggs, going to Pokestops that have known landmarks attached to them, and fighting gyms all require getting up out of your seat and going outside to play the game. The game experience is much more lackluster when the player does not perform some sort of physical activity. So overall I really enjoy the hidden message that this game has as it has made me exercise much more and motivated me to go out on adventures instead of staying in all day. Finally, looking at the game as a whole, I believe that Pokemon GO is a very popular game due to it being such a large franchise as well as its multiplayer features and player friendly design.

Did you catch anything interesting recently? The “hidden agenda” of Pokemon Go certainly makes sense, since personally the game has gotten me out of my bed and walking around on multiple occasions. It has also given me and my friends something to connect over and bond with, as well as a way to find new friends. There are so many different features that make this game such a unique playing experience, which has something for everyone, whether they want to catch cute Pokemon, battle, or catch strong Pokemon.

The game I chose to play is called Block Puzzle. This game is an online game that you can download from the app store for free and play on your phone. In this game, you start with a blank square grid and are given 3 different block shapes at a time that you are to fit onto the grid and once you complete a vertical or horizontal line it disappears and you gain points. The point of the game is to go as long as you can clearing lines until you run out of space on the grid and thus the game is over. I find it very addicted and stimulating for my brain as you have to use strategy and consider every choice you make as to where to put the blocks in order to ensure elimination of a line in order to avoid taking up all the space on the grid. I selected this game as I enjoy games that are very straightforward and consistent. I don’t enjoy games that require lots of different aspects and objectives but rather one simple goal which exactly what this game is. I also enjoy that I’m competing with myself in a sense that each time I play I have to beat my own high score which honestly what makes it so addicting as I keep going back and wanting to do better each time. I feel as though this game is a very calming escape where I can just enjoy myself and decompress while I focus on one specific action in the game. Some game such as video games are high stress and exciting while games like this are calming while still being fun which I enjoy.

I also had an interest in playing this game because I loved horror movies, and I wanted to try something where I would play an RPG game about horror and survival. The game is a survival horror and RPG game, a spin-off from Dark Souls; however, you’re trying to survive in a pandemic filled with enemies in different locations. The game is single-player and multiplayer if you’re playing online. When online, you can call on players that will help you survive in a Victorian-era-styled city known as Yharnam.
The start screen of the game gives the option of whether you want to play online or offline. I decided to play offline because I wanted to focus on the game without disturbances from the network or other online players. I then had to create my character, my hunter, where I could provide my character their name, age, gender, skin color, body type, and appearance. The only issue I had with the character customization was they had limited options for creating a Black character where they had no black hair types, such as braids, locs, or afros of all things. Most of the hairstyles were only straight hairstyles suitable for any race of the character, except for my black character. It gets even better. They even had limited options in face templates that would suit my black personality, whereas many face templates have European looks. In this case, I decided to create black female a character and manipulate the appearance of the face to shrug off this issue. The game also allows you to create a backstory for the character. Once I’m finished creating my character, I will finalize everything to start the game. The game cuts into a scene where my unconscious character is greeted by a mysterious older man when suddenly a beastly wolf crashes into the room, causing the man to attack the beastly wolf to protect me. I then gained consciousness and was in a very dark room, which appeared to be a gothic church. The game provided tutorials on what items I should be looking for. The game’s scenery was in the third person; I could see the whole body of my character. The game’s design was intense and creepy, so I was conscious of where to go. The room I was in had two doors, one in the back and the other in the front. I went to the one in the front, where I was approached by demons/ghouls on the ground that would provide me with tutorials during the journey. As I make my way to the gothic church, I come across the same beastly wolf from before. At first, I was very hesitant because of its appearance with its long arms and legs, along with the gleaming white eyes. However, I took no chances and decided to go for the attack on the beast. Unfortunately, the wolf ended up killing me, and I was transferred into another world. I was provided with weapons, advice, and tutorials from the ghouls and demons. It wasn’t very clear because I didn’t know where I was at. The place was very bright and seemed more peaceful as if I was in the Garden of Eden compared to the area where I was. It even had a store where I could purchase items, weapons, and clothing. Once I had all the things I needed, I could return to the checkpoint where the beast killed me. After returning to the gothic church, I made my fight the beast in which I made ten attempts to defeat the beast. On the tenth attempt, I killed by delivering a heavy attack behind the enemy and striking the final blow when it dazed. I then made my way out of the gothic church, where I was at a gothic architectural town known as “Yharman.” The city looks vacant and destroyed, as if a pandemic had caused chaos. As I continued my journey in the city, I was approached by enemies from different locations in which I was forced to defend myself, so I won’t die and begin at my checkpoint. The game is intense because it requires navigation in collecting valuable items to strengthen your character in defeating enemies. The game also requires critical thinking about how you beat different types of enemies that may require certain weapons, items, and choices of defeating an enemy, whether it’s fighting or fleeing from your enemy. However, I recommend anyone who’s into RPG and horror games to play this game.

I know this sounds like a bandwagon but I played and beat Eldin ring when it came out. It was my first ever souls like game and I loved it. Thank you so much for describing. this game because I. was always interested in it. Ten attempts is a lot but I have had dozens of attempts on some bosses in eldin ring so I feel your pain.

I never was one to play creepy scary games but it sounds very creative. Like you said, it does seem very intense, but it’s crazy how new of a world the game designers built.

Overwatch is an fps game that is made up of two teams of five. There are a plethora of characters to choose from, who all do different things. The objective of the game is to eliminate all of the other players so you can take an objective in a timely manner. This is a multiplayer game and it is more fun when you are playing with friends and not random people. Overwatch is probably one of the most challenging games that I have played mechanics-wise. Since there are so many characters you have to learn each and every one of them and what they are. do. They all have different patterns of movement and abilities so it can be confusing. The mechanics of this game make it more interesting because it does not limit you to a small group of characters that have limited movement. Finally, there are plenty of hidden agendas in this game. The game is free to play, which gives them the. ability to charge whatever amount they would like in the shops. Which in my opinion is a rip-off, because those items were once free.

I had an interest in playing Overwatch but got caught up playing Fortnite. The game looks entertaining and engaging. However, learning all the moves from each character can be pretty challenging because I need to figure out who I’m up against when I play this game. I’m not surprised that they would put a price on items that were once free, considering that some of these companies be sometimes greedy when it comes to providing certain things from a store.

I played Subway Surfers, which is a mobile game in which you are running away from a policeman. I chose that game because it was a past favorite of mine that I had not played in a while, and I was feeling nostalgic. It is a single player game that does not require any controller or complicated game mechanics. One just needs a touchscreen device that, where they would only need to tap and swipe the screen to be able to play. As a result, it was easy for me to pick up again, and one that beginners would also be able to pick up relatively quickly.

The game’s hidden agenda is to get its player to continue playing. The premise is very simple, and the endless nature of the objective to “get away” enables players to just keep on going. In addition, the incentives of missions, items, and the leaderboard also lended to this agenda to keep the player engaged.

I find it interesting that the exciting point about games like these is the adrenaline rush of not wanting to get caught but also enjoying flirting with danger, such as narrowly missing hitting an obstruction but succeeding in gaining an item. The sudden cut of this enjoyment when one loses is what makes people automatically click to start a new game.

I used to love playing Subway Surfers as a kid and recently started playing again. I had the same feeling as you as every time I pick this game up every once in a while, I always feel that nostalgia from childhood playing this game on my parent’s phones. Through the years, I feel that my perception or goal of the game as changed. In the past, I admired how easy the controls were as there was only one primary objective and it was very easy to follow. As I continued to grow up, my goals gradually began to change. Even though this game is a single player game, I have been seeing it as a multiplayer game in a way. My other friends who also play the game compete to get higher scores than me which motivates me to go even further. Not only does the objective design of the game inspire me to keep running away from the police man and dog, but the pure feeling of competition against my friends pushes me forward to keep playing even if the game might me redundant. I agree with the hidden agenda that you included in your post as the objective and the missions keep us going. The items that we pick up which can be upgraded through earning gold also makes the game fun and unique and keeps me engaged. I liked the part when you said “adrenaline rush” because as I continue running, the pace of the game goes faster and the higher the score gets the more adrenaline I feel as I do not want to lose the high score. I love the nature of mobile games as I played Pokemon GO this week and I love how we can play these great games in the palm of our hands.

I loved that game when I was younger and I always had so much fun running away and getting a jetpack and trying to get as many coins as I can. I agree with your point about the hidden agenda because the game is never-ending and only continues to get harder the better you do in it. At some point, the trains are going so fast around you that it becomes so intense and I think it is so cool. I agree with how you said it was an “adrenaline rush” because that is exactly how I feel once it gets to a certain point. Now I want to redownload it and play it again! Your response is awesome and I might go give Subway Surfers a play later!

I played Candy Crush. The game is played on aa mobile device and consists of you matching colors of candy. I picked this game because it is something that I play almost everyday whenever I have free time. It is a single-player game. The mechanics aren’t difficult. Just involves swiping the screen to match the colors. There are a lot of powerups available to use as well, and those just come by also tapping on the screen to select it. These mechanics make it very easy to play the game and makes my experience relaxing. I can play it laying down in bed, which is exactly what I did. The individual game had an implicit message. The goal was to clear all the gellies, and those gellies disappear by simply crushing the candy to make the gel pop. However, the main goal overall is to collect candy orders specific to the game.

Sometimes, I question if every level is passable. The games can get very challenging at times and I wonder if there’s a specific pattern you have to crush the candy in order to pass the level. Also, after you pop one candy, other ones come down to replace it, so I also wonder if those are random or set colors that get picked.

I play the game candy crush in my spare time. I’ve once thought my progress had erased but I was able to recover it due to it being connected to a social media account of mine.

The game I played was Solitaire Clash in which one will move all cards to the foundations in ascending order, beginning with the Ace and ending with the King. The game is timed for five minutes and one can earn gems and or money depending on which game selection you chose. I selected this game because I enjoy to play this in my spare time. The game is played single but is multiplayer in getting the prize pool, which is accessed after watching a 30 second advertisement. My experience is focused attempting to get a high score to win the highest number offered for the prize pool. The game’s hidden agenda is to have its user use their credit cards to add money to play for bigger money prize pool. Another analyzation is that the more time left on the clock is added to your score for that game.

It seems like that’s the goal of a lot of games today. So it becomes a part of the game design when you look at what features get the emphasis. Some games are just more challenging in free to play mode but others become very boring. From your review I think the game remains the same but it’s just a difference in payoff.

Valorant is a multiplayer first-person shooting game involving five players going against another team of five players. Each player can pick a specific agent that has their own abilities and characteristics. I selected that game because a lot of my friends play it and I really enjoy the game mechanics. The game is fun to play and I like competitive games. The multiplayer mechanic of the game has had a positive impact on my experience of the game because I love to play with my friends and I think a game where you can all come t together and have fun is what I like to do. The hidden agenda is to motivate players to become as good as they can and improve in rank and ability. The end goal of each competitive game is to win the match and then continue winning to become a higher rank and hopefully one day become good enough to hit the highest rank. I really enjoy this game and all of the different abilities each agent has and how you can utilize each ability to help win the game. Each agent is different and each person plays each agent differently and some people play more aggressively, while others play more passively and I love to see the variations in gameplay between players.

It looks like it has a really fun community. I play a game similar to valorant called CSGO, it has basically all the same basics as valorant. It is a 5v5 and you have to plant the bomb or eliminate the other team to win just like valorant. I like that you said there are multiple classes that you can choose from because that makes a game so much better. I hope you make it to the highest rank one day and I will definitely try this game out!

I selected this game because I have very fond memories playing it as a child, and it found a special place in my heart. The game can be played in single-player or multiplayer mode, with a single player cup consisting of four races, each race taking three laps to complete. The game involves different items you can get to take other races down, different tricks you could pull off to gain speed, and different characters you can unlock. While playing a race, you can effectively be moved from 1st to last place based on what items you get hit with, and the tricks help you gain necessary speed that could be the deciding factor in winning races. What’s so great about the game is the factor of chance: you never know if you’re going to get horrible item luck, or have great luck and easily win your races. This is what makes the game so fun, and so replayable.

Mario Kart Wii was also one of my favorite games growing up. When I was a child, my cousin and I would play this game together, where I would constantly choose a toad as my character. He hates rainbow road because he continually falls off the track, which would work to my advantage in winning the race. We would also play this game with my uncle, in which he beat us in so many races that we had to team up to win the race.

Mario Kart has to be one of my favorite games of all time. I loved playing it and I played it on my DS, but never on the wii. Even though it’s on the wii, most of the mechanics are the same I see. The DS though is mainly based on controls. I’m sure it’s not the same on the Wii, is it?
